Principled Participations 秉持原则

Students explored the scientific ideas of matter, volume, and mass, engaging in hands-on activities that helped them understand how these concepts connect to the world around them. Alongside this, they reviewed variant vowels and practised distinguishing the soft and hard sounds of ‘c’ and ‘g’, strengthening both their reading and pronunciation skills.

To finish their unit, students put together the pieces from their archaeological dig and, using the available information and what they had discovered, built a model of what the Mayan city likely looked like. Students had to be principled to make a successful project as part of a team that needed to plan, work, and clean up together.

By listening and sharing carefully, students compared different myths thoughtfully, instead of judging or dismissing other stories. They stayed respectful and open-minded, appreciating what makes each tale special. This kind of thoughtful exchange makes cross-cultural conversation both engaging and meaningful.

This foundational method not only enhanced their computational fluency but also deepened their understanding of number composition, fostering logical thinking and mathematical confidence.
Ms. Leaf: This week in Grade 6 mathematics, the students uncovered that the concept of "ratio" actually has a subtle connection with the idea of "principled participation". When studying ratios, students are not merely comparing the sizes of two quantities but also understanding a kind of principled distributive relationship. For instance, distributing tasks or resources proportionally embodies the spirit of "principled participation"—where each person assumes responsibilities or shares outcomes based on clear and fair rules (i.e., ratios). The mathematical concept of "ratio" teaches students a rational and fair way of thinking, which serves as an essential foundation for principled participation in real life: through clear mathematical rules, students learn how to collaborate fairly and participate collectively.
